Bunscoil Mhuire students celebrate St. Brigid’s Day with the making of crosses and the colouring and making of St. Brigid’s cloak.
Saint Brigid of Kildare or Saint Brigid of Ireland is the patroness saint of Ireland, and one of the three national saints along with Patrick and Columba The distinctive St. Brigid’s cross is displayed on this day. The cross is woven from rushes with 4 arms tied at the end and meeting in a woven patterned centre. Traditionally they were displayed over the door of a house to ward off evil. The tradition marks the beginning of spring, St. Brigid’s Day being the 1stFebruary.
