Assembly for the Presentation Sisters

Bunscoil Mhuire hosted a special assembly on December 14th to mark the Presentation sisters leaving Youghal after serving the town and it’s people for one hundred and eighty nine years.Bunscoil Mhuire was originally a Presentation convent primary school where many nuns worked as teachers and principals over the years. Youghal Presentation Convent also had the rare distinction of bringing an extraordinary beauty into the lives of the people by the introduction of the lace making school during famine times. The Presentation sisters left Youghal on August 31st 2023 when the remaining sisters transferred to Midleton Convent.
At our assembly representatives from 2nd to 6th class spoke about the works and legacy of the Presentation sisters in Youghal. They also explained the meaning of the lantern to represent Nano Nagle who founded the Presentation order in 1775 and became known as the Lady of the Lantern in Cork where she spent her nights visiting the poor and the sick. A lantern was lit by Sr. Placida and will remain in the main entrance of our school to honour the legacy of the Presentation sisters in Youghal 1834-2023.
Sr. Grace McKernan addressed the children and told them the story of Nano Nagle’s life. She also presented the school with some books on Nano Nagle.
Sr. Eileen Clear led the children in a decade of the rosary reminding us of the catholic ethos of our school.
Lastly Sr. Placida was presented with a picture of Youghal lighthouse as a reminder of time spent in our town.
Many thanks to the sisters for joining us on this special occasion, to our pupils who participated in the assembly and to our Deputy Principal Ms. Leamy for organising the event.
